This isn't just a issue with Holliday but anyone appoaching free agency. Especially a right handed hitter considering playing at ATT.
Basically all players earn their contracts through the numbers they produce and if they play their homegames here they will skew their numbers down in relation with others as they play toward their next contract.
No hitter other than Bonds and those who hit in front and behind him has ever had their best numbers season in this park, other than Molina who had never hit in the heart of an order.(for obvious reasons)
Add to that the fickle nature of Bay Area sports fans and the little adulation they accord players in SF and you have a lot of negatives you have to overcome to get ego driven stars to come here.
Especially if they are from less cosmopolitan and diverse areas of the US, or from abroad.
The Giants may have to shift their stratagy to acquiring players already under two year deals and let them get acclimated to the baseball situation here before breaking the bank on signings of players who ultimately won't be happy here.
This seems to have worked well with Affeldt and may work well if they attempt to resign Justin Miller.
They seem to have the quirky personalities which thrive in this area as did Eric Byrnes while with the A's.
Zito was an attempt at the same thing but the dollars to talent ratio wasn't there and his style of pitching was always more suited to the AL.

Byrnes is from San Carlos so we know why he thrived here. I think Affeldt is ready to sign an extension right now. Also think the make-up of this team due to the size of the park should reflect the cardinals of the 80's. Who was their power hitter Jack Clark? The pitching is what is going to carry this team. We need OPS and AVG guys and add 30 HR guy and your good.

Only problem with signing Holiday is the whole contract issue...if we could somehow sign him for longer I'd be more on board.

Luckily we got 2-3 years of Jeremy under our control. It was one of the wise things Sabean accomplished this off-season.
Another is the buyout clause for Renteria in 2010. $500,000 is all he'll be earning from us next year.
But if we had split that 8 million on either Orlando Cabrera/Felipe Loez and Orlando Hudson we wouldn't have had to invest so much stock in unprovens like Lewis and Burress.
The ideas about the team structure are interesting but the guys like Coleman and Mcgee, etc. got a lot out of the 100 degree astroturf during the St Louie summers. They were pretty free swingers, not your typical average and ops. guys. We need patient line drive guys with the speed to stretch and take advantage of the alleys at home.
Obviously ATT lends itself to pitching and defense so we have almost 1/2 the equation solved. 1st we need a left handed bat like Adrien Gonzalez, Ryan Howard or Prince Fielder with opposite field power to hold down 1 corner infield position and the clean-up spot in the order.
I'm OK with Rowand Leading off. The 2 hole is the cavern. Sandoval can hit 3rd with that protection a power bat provides free swingers, and Posey/Molina (1 year deal) can hold the tail end with Schierholtz.
The key is fnding the defensive middle infielder(s)/ops guy(s) like a Placido Polanco only with dynamic speed.
Good Luck with that!
