God this makes me mad.
Anyone who saw the presser the day of the trade knew Sanchez wasn't interested in staying here.
He was completely deflated and probably immediately decided to tank the at bats the would have triggered the option.
We don't want to pay him 8 mil next year and I say cut that bait. You won't know about the trade for a while but it sure was more wasted money.
I hope when the ownership group ponies up to cover the shortfall they tell Neukom that this is the last time they want to get hit up for FA payroll mistakes.
Other than Molina and Affeldt he hasn't landed any solid production in free agency in five years now.
The money paid to the parade of scrubs since Benitez was basically paid to leave is laughable if it weren't so tragic is it's cost to the future. To pay Sanchez 2 mil on top of that when it was clear he was hurt and wouldn't want to play here is really thumbing your nose in ownerships face. You'd think he worked for AIG.
Alderson may develop into something but he was blocked in getting to the majors by a better pitcher and it's not like Bumgarner has had an electric impact at this level.
Hopefully the fiscal mismangement will seal the case (and the book) on the Sabean regime.
One wonders exactly how the behind the scenes machinations of the end of the Bonds Era worked but I would be interested to know how much input McGowan, Sabean, Bonds, Sue Burns and others held sway over the decisions that were made following the departure of Kent.
I think most agree now that his presence as competition/motivation to Bonds and his eventual absence and non-replacement led to the competitive downfall during the years of the HR record chase.
We'll see soon enough.
